    Duke Freshmen to Receive Free iPods

    NEW YORK (Billboard) - Duke University in Durham, N.C., has inked a deal with Apple Computer Inc. to distribute iPods to all freshmen students this August.

    The 1,650 members of the incoming freshman class will each receive a 20-GB iPod at orientation on Aug. 19. The devices will come preloaded with Duke-related content, such as orientation information and the school's academic calendar.


    Duke is also licensing Apple iTunes software to distribute a special version of iTunes that offers students the ability to download course content provided by faculty, including language lessons, music, recorded lectures and audiobooks.


    Additionally, students will be able to purchase music through the iTunes Music Store.


    The iPod distribution is part of a pilot program between Duke and Apple that will be evaluated after one year. Duke is paying for the project with strategic planning funds that it has set aside for one-time innovative technology purposes.


    "We're approaching this as an experiment, one we hope will motivate our faculty and students to think creatively about using digital audio content and a mobile computing environment to advance educational goals," said Tracy Futhey, Duke's VP for information technology. "We think the power and flexibility of these devices offer some real advantages over other media used to distribute educational content, such as CD-ROMs and DVDs."


    The effort is part of a larger Apple initiative to spread the reach of iTunes and iPod onto college campuses. Apple has started a program called "iTunes on Campus" that allows colleges to obtain free institutional licenses to distribute iTunes to students.

    I finally made my fall 2004 schedule.  Not as good as I had wanted it to be, but still works...



    Damn Sophmores with their lowest priority in choosing classes.

    With 15+ sections of second year english there weren't any openings by the time I went to register.  I'm so glad that I found classes that fit my "school in the morning/work in the afternoon" schedule.  But damn.. two classes in geography... who knows..maybe I might just minor in it...

    A business admin major with a geography minor.. O_O


    Damn the CA budget shortfall and DAMN the cutting of 500+ section.  I have a feeling its going to be more than 4 years to graduate now... especially though the college of business.. =X

    dang dude, what the freak.. I don't even know why them come in the craploads...

    I think starting next month, just for the fun of it, I think I'll keep all the ones I get and I'll collect them all the way until the new year.  Just to see how many apps I get in a 4 month period...

    Probably not, viola.  I have more credit than I make per month.  By getting another card might just encourage bad behavior... O_O

    All the stresses in my life seemed to lessen when I had one...


    I remember having my first one when I was about 8 or 9.

    I used to limit myself to one per day..


    then two... and then three...


    and now sometimes there are times when I go through a whole PACK in one day...


    but I havn't gone through more than one pack per day.  That stuff ain't cheap O_O


     


    My supervisor doesn't like to use it...
      At all. 


     She says its really bad for my teeth and my mouth. 
    ...and something about it promoting cancer... 


    .. but I don't believe it.  And I could care less.


    Helen hates other people that use it but she's nice enough to help me purchase them at Costco.  I get a substantial discount because I purchase them in cartons, instead of individual packs...


    She rather help me get it instead of me going to the corner store or to the supermarket to buy it at full price.  Whatta sweetheart


     


    I'm HELLA craving one right now... 


     But I'm on empty..  BOOOOOO!!!


     



    I guess I just have to wait til tomorrow to get some.  At full price =(

    Yes, I know that I do recieve a lot of credit card applications in the mail (averaging about 2 or 3 per week) but...

    So when I recieved this credit card application from them i was very estatic.

    World War One Claims Another Victim

    VENICE (Reuters) - A 70-year-old Italian died on Saturday when a World War One bomb, part of his collection of military memorabilia, exploded while he was showing it to a friend in his garden.







     

    Aldo Busato, a retired farmer, died instantly. The man he was showing the bomb to was seriously injured, the local fire brigade said.


    Busato lived in north-eastern Italy, the focus of Italian fighting against the Austro-Hungarians in the 1914-1918 war.

    Dangling from Meat Hooks, for Fun

    MIAMI (Reuters) - Law enforcement officials in the Florida Keys are mystified by a bizarre new pastime -- young people dangling themselves from meat hooks on a popular sandbar.







     

    A U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) spokeswoman said on Sunday that the Monroe County sheriff's office and Coast Guard were called on July 12 to the sandbar off Whale Harbor in Islamorada where locals say wild behavior is becoming a tradition.


    They found that five young people had erected a bamboo tripod and hung meat hooks from it. A young woman, her feet brushing the surface of the shallow water, dangled from the frame, hooks embedded firmly in her shoulders.


    According to a Coast Guard video, she did not seem to mind the hooks.


    Lt. Tom Brazil of the Coast Guard told the Key West Citizen newspaper that a young man, who also had hooks embedded in his heavily pierced and tattooed skin, assured him the group was "just enjoying the afternoon."


    A Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami said the group had clearly done this before and intended to post photos of themselves on a Web site dedicated to "body modification" -- the ritualistic piercing of the body.


    "It looked like a daily routine for them," she said, adding that the hooks had been inserted in the skin in a professional manner and had drawn very little blood."


    "As long as they weren't creating any kind of ruckus or riot within a crowd they really weren't breaking any laws."


    The Coast Guard passed the video on to federal justice authorities but no further action will be taken.

    i honestly don't understand what's so terrible about jury duty... i loved it. they pay you to go there, they reimburse you for your mileage and work pays you regular pay too! plus usually you get assigned a case you probably don't have to get there til 9, and they let you go by 3 and they give you like an 1.5 hr lunch break. and i still got paid for 8hrs at work...=D OH MAN and the lawyer there was friggin hot.


    of course, now that i like jury duty...i've never been called back

    I'm just a part time worker, so my work place doesn't pay regular pay for me, so it would just be income from the case. .
    If I got paid for work while being on jury duty that would be an entirely different story =D

    Man Jailed for Allegedly Sucking Toes


    GREENSBURG, Pa. - A man sucked the toes or kissed the feet of two women and a girl in surprise assaults, police said.







     

    A 12-year-old told police that she was reading at the library when James M. Kilpatrick, 21, of Greensburg, started kissing her feet, then offered her 22-year-old sister a dollar to let him do the same to her.


    At a nearby park, one woman told police she dozed off while sunbathing and woke up to find Kilpatrick sucking her toes. Another woman had her toes sucked when she stopped to read a memorial plaque in the park, police said.


    Kilpatrick remained jailed unable to post $10,000 bond Friday, a day after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing on indecent assault and other charges including stalking, corruption of minors and harassment.


    All the incidents occurred between July 3 and July 9. All the victims picked out Kilpatrick from a photo lineup, police said.


    It wasn't immediately clear if Kilpatrick has an attorney.

    Some 80 women of various hair colors were tested on their mental capacity to work quickly and precisely in a series of psychometric tests. Before sitting the tests, half the participants had to read "dumb blonde" jokes, such as:


    "Why do blondes open yogurt pots while still at the supermarket? -- Because it says 'Open Here' on the lid."


    "No blonde woman believes she is stupid," said Jens Foerster a social psychologist from the International University Bremen in northern Germany on Wednesday.


    "But after exposure to negative social-stereotypes about them, the fair-haired participants performed significantly more slowly in the tests."


    Foerster explained the result by saying that when people are told they can't perform a task well, they work more slowly but more cautiously, to try to make fewer mistakes.


    "The study shows that even unfounded prejudices generally dismissed as untrue can affect an individual's confidence in their own ability," said Foerster.

    BONDING WITH THE CO-WORKERS...


    ....SO NOT WHAT I EXPECTED...


    So today at work, there were two different little "parties" that took place, one that took place during work hours, and the other a dinner after work...


    The one that took place during worktime was to celebrate the near arrival of one of the nurse's first born children.  Due in about two weeks, she is finally going to go onto maternity leave.  So, to celebrate this occasion, the department had a potluck for her. 


     By "department" we thought that it was just a small gathering of just people on our floor, but in actuality it was the people from our floor, with some people who work in a somewhat closely related department across the street.


    I felt soOoO out of place in that, being one of two guys there, and the rest were women who ranged in ages between 31 and 64.  All the stares.. all the awkward conversations with people that I didn't know.  THE HORROR!! @_@


    ----------------
    The dinner was held at Buca di Beppos, an "upscale" Immigrant Southern Italian restaurant chain.  The place was pretty cool.  The walls were LINED with pictures.  There was NO part of the walls that weren't covered with photos.  Even the restrooms were.  All I had to say was wow.


    my supervisor, one of the nurses, a friend and I were all planning to order really good and meaty and fat items for dinner.  But appearantly, the head honcho had already ordered all the food for the dinner.


    And to accomidate for all the vegetarians that were with us, we only had *TWO* orders (out of at least 12 dishes) that contained meat.  After dinner, I still felt kind of hungry.. @_@


    But the thing that made me most uncomfortable was the amount of people that were at the dinner.  [If you havn't realized already, I don't do well with interaction with other people.  I tend to do or say really stupid things =X ].  To my understanding of the whole situation, I had thought it was just a goodbye to the third-year fellow and a welcoming of a new one.  Just a casual dinner with all the co-workers that worked closely with them...


    I was completely wrong.

    the dinner party had about 30 attendees.  People with their spouses and people that I've never seen before.  Yet more conversations with people twice and three times [and in two instances, four times] my age.  I tried staring out into space to avoid conversing, but that didn't work...


    My supervisor and I kept looking at each other, doing our usual smile and laugh.


    Laura, my favorite nurse, EMBARASSED me at the table in front of 10 people I didn't even know.  She told them about how Helen, her and I got to the restaurant too early so we went over to the Burlington Coat Factory.  I followed her around and then she brought me into the panties and bra section and telling me what to get for a future girlfriend..  A 40 year old.  Giving that kind of advice to an 18 year old.  @_@ 
    ...boy I HOPE i never see those people ever again...


    One of the second year doctors kept poking me in the side and asking me if I was having fun.  I smiled and said "of course".  Then i went back into my own little world..


    I really felt out of place..


    ...no wonder my 21 year old co-worker opted not to go..


    Free food vs. Socializing with a Crapload of old fogies that I don't know anything about, all being doctors and their spouses...


    ...I think I should think more carefully about this next year when they have this fellows in/out dinner again...



    JURY DUTY, DAY 4...




    Sweeeeeeet.  If I can get through one more day without having to get called in, I will have completed my jury duty for one year.  I then would not have to worry about this again until this time next year.


    But seeing how they aren't calling in any new jurors in two days, I don't think they'll need any more of us.  ::crosses fingers::

    Contact's aren't that uncomfortable, once you finish the break-in period (for me it was about a month).  But when debris flies into the eyes, it still hurts like a beotch and I start watering up like a wuss =X


    Maybe glasses make you look smart, but for me they make me look dorkish

    I know what be living on my contacts, but thanks for the warning Puiyi.  My optometrist had warned me about the joys of eye infections and all that other good stuff if i didn't clean them out and change the buffer daily.


    I remember the first day that I skipped out on cleaning I felt so dirty and bad, but as time passed I didn't seem to mind...


    Until that ghastly delay in cleaning shown in the previous entry.  First time i didn't clean it that long either...











    it's okay eric! you can't POSSIBLY contaminate 14 bottles of cleanser. maybe it would helped if you cleaned your contacts a little more often buddy!!!! you could get like a ulcer in your eye or something and then it'd be all bad and then you're gunna regret not cleaning out your contacts.AAHHHHHHH!!!! im just messing with you. hahah bye eric!

    aka. A great way to start something between siblings...

    So last night my sister called home and we chatted for about 10 minutes.  She had told me that she was out all night and that she was very tired (at 10o'clock at night) so she told me that mom shouldn't call her when she gets home.


    Usually, my mom asks me before she calls if my sister had called home or if I had talked to her online that day.  But yesterday, she didn't do that.


    She called up my sister, which she got her voicemail.  Five minutes later she called back home, quite pissed off that my mom had called her when she had explicitly told me NOT to have our mom call.


    I saw my phone vibe.  I dared not pick it up... O_O


    my bad, cathleen..
    But at least mom and I got a great laugh out of it



    CAN SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THIS TO ME...


    Computer in the Living Room:



    Rarely used, when I do use I just use for downloading from KaZaa and doing general websurfing.  And to download warez and keygens and stuff
    [861 Adware files...  malware, spyware, and cookies... ] 


    Computer inside my room:



    Used on a daily basis, e-mail, web-surfing, online purchases, and basically everything minus downloading through P2P or visiting warez sites.


    [45 New Objects, all questionable cookies... ]

    You would think that the computer you use more would be the one with more Spyware, but I guess that's not always the case...



    JURY COUNT-DOWN, DAY 2...



    I soooo hope I don't get called in for Wednesday.  Wednesday is going to be a really exciting day at work..  and potentially after work as well...


    ..but then again, knowing my luck, I probably just jynxed myself
